Day 31 - Sunday January 31st 2010

I did it - one month taking a photo a day!

To mark the occasion - a surprise event! While Tim had tickets to the Laneway Festival - held at Callum Park, I was ticketless. None the less - I ventured to the venue late in the day to see if I could get a few interesting photos outside the venue. As it so happens, I managed to score a free ticket (and a VIP pass), which wouldn't have happened if I wasn't out there scouting around for a photo of the day. Here's a pic from one of the stages just before I left. Love the old architecture with the modern musical set up.

Exposure: 0.025 (1/40)
Aperture: f/11
ISO: 320
Flash: None

Day 30 - Saturday January 30th 2010

Going to the movies is rare for us these days - and on a Saturday night is even rarer. That we went to the George Street cinemas, made this whole night a new experience. Off to see 'The Road' - which was the most harrowing movie I've seen - we first had to prepare ourselves for George St on a hectic Saturday night!

Aperture: f/4
Exposure: .0666 (1/15)
ISO: 4oo
Flash: None

Day 29 - Friday 29th January 2010

Today I'm in Melbourne for the day for work. Starting of in Pahran, I spent some time walking up and down Chapel Street killing time. Playing around with the photo settings on the Nexus One, I took this photo in between coffees.

Day 28 - Thursday January 28th 2010

Sydney isn't Sydney unless there's a good summer storm. After a double date at Rosso Pomodoro (only the Best Pizza in Sydney!), the rain came pouring down, and there was an incredible lightning display as we drove back over the Anzac Bridget. Nexus One didn't really do the night scene justice, but it was the only camera on hand.

Day 27 - Wednesday January 27th 2010

It's a Wednesday that feels like a Monday because of yesterday's public holiday. Tired from work, nothing exciting on... let's go outside. As we live under the flight path, it seems only right that I start some plane shots. Running out of light - this was a lucky shot that caught the movement of the plane over our neighbour's roof.

Day 26 - Tuesday January 26th 2010

Australia Day! Public Holiday-Day.... and on a Tuesday! After a day sweltering in the humidity, it was tough to endure the heat at the Enmore where we say the Laughing Clowns and Dirty Three. Great show, though the humidity killed us. Here we are walking to the theatre after a dinner at Faheems.

Camera: Nexus One
Flash: No

Day 25 - Monday January 25th 2010

A day off for Tim means he's the house husband, and must cook me dinner. What a surprise - spaghetti! But that's okay - because when Tim cooks you know you'll get the most perfectly chopped vegetables ever.

Exposure: .8 (8/10)
Aperture: f/20.0
ISO: 400
Flash: No

Day 24 - Sunday January 24th 2010

A good Sunday is a day where there is nothing to be done. There's cricket on TV and time between overs for a walk around Callum Park. But the photo of the day is the little clown in our front garden left by the old owners. Attempting to create a Lomo-type effect with my Seahorse Photoshop rip off, I ended up with something quite eerie. The clown is still in our front yard if you want to visit.

Aperture: f/5.0
Exposure: 0.002 (1/500)
ISO: 400
Flash: No

Day 23 - Saturday January 23rd 2010

When it's a 40 degree day in Sydney, there's nothing better to do than have... a BBQ! Though by 4pm the Southerly had picked up, a tree had fallen on the neighbours house (photo wasn't that great though), and we were all in jumpers by 8pm. Using the slingshot to shoot bottle tops in the garden was also part of the night's fun.

Aperture: f/3.5
Exposure: 0.8 (8/10)
ISO: 800
Flash: No

Saturday, January 23, 2010

Day 22 - Friday January 22nd 2010

We braved the 30 degree heat, the young crowd and Muse - and found ourselves at yet another Big Day Out. Catching Tumbleweed (The 'weed!), Devandra Banhart, Dead Prez and Fear Factory, it was another January day of music and Snow Cones. With our V-Vip Lizard Lounge access, we were able to keep well away from the crowd at the main stage - who were all hip hopping along to Dizzee Rascal.

Camera: Nexus One

Day 21 - Thursday January 21st 2010

Family Dinner at Mum and Dads - and it's 3 kilos of mussels we need to get through. With six people - not a problem. And here are the remains. Taken with Nexus One.

Wednesday, January 20, 2010

Day 20 - Wednesday January 20th 2010

Taking a photo of the moon is hard! Especially as it's the only inspiring thing to capture tonight and it's only a little baby moon. None of this full moon beauty business. With the tripod set up, this was the best shot that I was able to capture - giving me the clearest shot of the moon.

Settings:

ISO: 100
Aperture: f/5.0
Exposure: .4 (4/10)

Tuesday, January 19, 2010

Day 19 - Tuesday January 19th 2010

A session at the gym followed by a trip to our PO Box. There's something to be said about those rows and rows of numbers. Surely we can get a good photo out of this? Play around with the settings for a blur on the numbers, then some post-production settings, and some people could say they could sell this for thousands of dollars.

Monday, January 18, 2010

Day 18 - Monday January 18th 2010

Monday's aren't fun days. A non-descript day at work, followed by a BBQ of ham (vege) burgers, and some house keeping. The load of all whites that were hanging on the line were the subject of today's shoot. Surely a Hills Hoist of White's could create an interesting shot. Add a bit of post-production trickery, and we're close.

Sunday, January 17, 2010

Day 17 - Sunday January 17th 2010

As part of the Sydney Festival, the Seymour Centre is hosting the Signal to Noise Exhibition. A collection of Fanzines and other ephemera from the post punk period in Sydney it was an interesting, though small, snippet of Australian counter-culture. No photos were allowed inside, so Tim checking out the brochure at the front has to do.

Day 16 - Saturday January 16th 2010

It's not a Sydney Festival without a visit to The Famous Speigel Tent, and this year we saw The Books. A humorous electronic mix of cello and hypnotherapy vhs visuals, it was a delight. Follow that up with a surprise ticket to David Sedaris (Chloe) and a boring night at John Cale (Tim) and it's pure Festival fun.

Saturday, January 16, 2010

Day 15 - Friday January 15th 2010

Friday Night and it's another Dinner with the Girls at the Malaya - vegetarian banquet of course! This time followed by evil chocolate cake for Rachel (aka CB's) birthday. Camera fail with no batteries, so the trusty Nexus One comes out, this time with over exposing flash, creating an interesting birthday cake photo. Is it a Giant Knife or a Miniature Cake?? Followed this with Luke Dearnley's 40th at Herman's at it was a night of birthday fun.

Day 14 - Thursday January 14th 2010

What a great night. I get to go home then back to the office for an 8pm conference call. So all you get tonight is a rarely seen view of my work building at night. I've never seen the coloured lights on before - so a treat for us all.

Wednesday, January 13, 2010

Day 13 - Wednesday January 13th 2010

It's raining, I'm waiting for Tim to come home from the gym, I've had a miserable day, and in no mood for inspirational photos. How about we set up the tripod and play around with some manual settings with shots through the back window? Did I capture some good texture?

Settings:

Aperture: f/18.0
ISO: 250
Exposure Time 25/1 (yes 25 seconds! how good is the tripod?)

Day 12 - Tuesday January 12th 2010

January in Sydney means Sydney Festival, a month when the CBD finally is alive with great music and surprising street art and galleries. Like this light display we saw down one of the alley's off George St which we walked through on our way to see the amazing Grizzly Bear.

Tuesday, January 12, 2010

Day 11 - Monday January 11th 2010

Walking around our block tonight, I spent some time playing around with different contrast settings on my camera, seeing how I can change aperture and shutter speed to create different effects. Here is my favourite picture from this outing - who would have thought I could have made the sewerage tower look good.

Settings were
ISO:250
Aperture: f/22.0
Shutter: 1/25

Sunday, January 10, 2010

Day 10 - Sunday January 10th 2010

Our first Sydney Festival show for 2010 and we're off to see the Tom Tom Crew at the Sydney Opera House. Great show of beatboxing, turntable-ism and acrobatics. Of course the camera has run out of batteries so time to try out the camera on my Nexus One Google phone. An obligatory one of the Opera House of course!

Day 9 - Saturday January 9th 2010

Tim and Fiona's Wedding at Swain Gardens Killara. Beautiful (though very hot!) day, and Tim C looked dashing in his Best Man's outfit. Even when all the post wedding photography was going on, we managed to get a very rare picture of us, decked out in Best Man Blues Brothers hat's and our fans.

Saturday, January 9, 2010

Day 8 - Friday January 8th 2010

Date night tonight, and Tim and I have made a booking for La Grande Bouffe a popular, always packed French Restaurant in Balmain. Dinner special means we need to be out by 8pm, but that was enough time to eat snails, scallops, veal (not me), kingfish (me) and this delicious dessert of stewed strawberries and ice cream. Not normally a dessert eater, this was a must.

Thursday, January 7, 2010

Day 7 - Thursday January 7th 2010

Late night shopping means a quick dash across the Pyrmont Bridge to Myer and Victoria's Basement to find a Frypan as a wedding present for Tim and Fee. All I had time for was a quick snap of the George St intersection. Didn't really capture the hectic pace of the place, so you'll have to use your imagination on this one.

Day 6 - January 6th 2010

Tim is best man at Tim and Fee's wedding on the weekend so we needed to go over and have a 'fitting' for the waistcoats. Doesn't he look handsome.

Day 5 - January 5th 2010

First day at work after Christmas Holidays - not much inspired me today. So while cooking dinner, thought I'd play around with the Spot Meter settings on my Canon EOS40D and see what did what. It's very Photo Tips 101 to try it with a candle - but hey.

Monday, January 4, 2010

Day 4 - January 4th 2010

Last day of my Christmas Holidays, and being a Monday - am stuck doing odd jobs. Having to catch a bus to the mechanic in Balmain, to see if he can fix my broken down car, I stop at my favourite Mullens Street Bus Stop. I love this wall.

Sunday, January 3, 2010

Day 3 - January 3rd 2010

Last Sunday of the Christmas Holidays, and I've planned a trip to the MCA to see the Olafur Eliasson exhibition - Icelandic experiments with light. All inspired by what I'm going to see (and more so, very unimpressed with the grey rainy weather of the past 10 days), I'm taking photos of colour on my morning walk. Strangely enough - it's the council bins that catch my eye - particularly when I snap a collection of all four bin types.

Saturday, January 2, 2010

Day 2 - January 2nd 2010

It's always a good idea to stop at the Fish Markets to pick a bag of prawns for lunch. Unfortunately today it was pouring with rain, and as Tim and I had just bought six pillows, I had to wait in the crowded passageway while Tim went to get the prawns. Perfect time to take a few pictures with my point and shoot.

Day 1 - January 1st 2010

It's a New Year, and my first photo in my Photo a Day project. Like all NYE Resolutions - determined to stick to it. Picture from our backyard around 10am on New Years Day. I am determined to keep my garden alive this year - and these flowers look like fireworks.
